The Strange Tales of the Alphabet Children
by Matthew Rumbelow
A self professed Edward Gorey fan, self-published author Matthew Rumbelow decided to create his own homage to the famous illustrator and writer with his rendition of The Gashleycrumb Tinies titled The Strange Tales of the Alphabet Children.
As a fellow Edward Gorey fan I was absolutely honoured to be asked by Matthew to create the artwork for each of the 26 characters which was a mix of double page spreads, single page illustrations, spot illustrations, plus the book cover. To honour the style of the original Gashleycrumb Tinies I kept the illustrations in the tone of the Victorian era, using a darker palette and line work, which was a fun juxtaposition to the modern day setting.
